ON BEING HONORED and HUMBLED by FAPA Awards!

Published July 16, 2017

It was just a year ago that I held the first printed copies of my memoir, Finding Heaven In The Dark, in my hands. That was a precious and memorable moment after years of starts and stops in the cathartic process of telling the story of my early life struggles and triumph.

My wife,Susan, took one of the 10 paperback copies to read. Though we were only married two years before, she encouraged my completion of the project I had begun with the encouragement of my late wife,Maxine.

It was Susan who witnessed the financial and emotional struggles I endured as an independently published author. She was there as I wrestled with poor internet service and computer problems at the campground  in western Michigan that we were working at, in the Summer of 2016. Those challenges, of working with a book editor over the spotty internet, as well as the 9 day disappearance of our beloved cat, may well be chronicled in a future book.

That whole journey has been an adventure and a learning experience. There is a saying that everyone has a story to tell and I believe it, but not all stories are worth sharing. I thought that mine might be just because of the true life principles I encountered and embraced. Exposing embarrassing details about my distant past was painful, but also liberating. The truth may hurt but it also heals.

Now to have those efforts validated, by those in the industry, is truly humbling. I felt honored to be a finalist in one category, but to be in contention for a second award is a great honor I really appreciate! Indie-published authors need love too! Thank you to the judges and all concerned members of FAPA!
